Jonathan
Maberry believes in vampires. Well, kind of. Writing under the pen
name of “Shane MacDougall”, Maberry has come to believe
very much in the reality of the vampire in human culture and history.
In his most recent book, The Vampire Slayers’ Field Guide to
the Undead (Strider Nolan Publishing, Inc.), Maberry has gathered
together a huge amount of information that demonstrates the incredibly
widespread belief in the undead. The book, 672 pages thick, collects
hundreds of different vampire species from around the world and throughout
history. From the Assyrian desert vampire demons to the cat vampires
of Japan to the living dead Viking vampires of Scandinavia, Maberry
has brought them all together in one volume.
Jonathan has been a professional writer for 24 years and has sold
600 articles and short stories, a dozen poems, and ten books, most
of them written under his real name.
Until he recently his primary writing focus was on martial arts and self-defense,
and he’s written for all of the top martial arts magazines. He holds an
8th degree black belt in jujutsu, an art he’s studied and taught for 35
years.
While teaching Women’s Self-Defense, Martial Arts History, and other courses
at Temple University, Jonathan published several course-related text books, and
has recently inked a deal to rewrite them for the mass market. His second book,
Effective Survival Methods: Self-Defense for Women (1987, Vortex Multimedia)
sold over 10,000 copies to universities all over the world and is still used
in dozens of self-defense programs for girls and women. That book has been extensively
rewritten and will be released next year by Strider Nolan Publishing as Ultimate
Self-Defense for Women: Safety Awareness for You and Your Family.
Jonathan has three other martial arts books in print by Strider Nolan (Ultimate
Jujutsu: Principles and Practices, Ultimate Sparring and The
Martial Arts Student
Logbook).
He is also the editor of the forthcoming book The Hit-Man's Music Trivia Quizbook.
The Vampire Slayers' Field Guide to the Undead is Jonathan's first nonfiction horror book under his pen name of Shane MacDougall, but in late 2004 Strider Nolan Publishing will debut the first in his new action-horror series, The
Forlorn Hope. However, Jonathan has always been a devoted fan of horror in all its forms, and has sold a few short horror stories and participates in panel discussions at horror events on all aspects of the horror genre.
Jonathan is a frequent lecturer and workshop leader, and teaches
adult-education courses in writing and on the business of writing.
He is also a writing coach and is part of several mentor programs,
including the HWA New Writers Mentor Program.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Jonathan now lives in Elkins Park,
Pennsylvania with his wife, Sara and stepson, Sam, neither of whom
are, as far as he is aware, vampires.
Jonathan is a relatively new member of the GSHW, having joined in the summer of 2003. |
