DECEMBER 2006

Carol MacAllister placed three submissions in Humorpress.com's contest. The titles are "Cash-less Finances", "Car Techy", and "Engagement Clam." Every so often, according to Carol, Humorpress.com produces a book with the winners.

John Platt, who recently relocated to Maine, sold "Wrong Place, Wrong Time" to Cemetery Dance Publications's Grave Tales comic book series. John says, "No word yet on what issue the story will appear in, or who will be illustrating it, but that information will come soon enough."

NOVEMBER 2006

Harrison Howe has a new poetry collection -- The Voice of Your Brother's Blood: Crying -- now available at http://www.etreasurespublishing.com/. AUGUST 2006

John R. Platt earned five more marketing awards for his work over the last last year.  One of them is a Pewter Award from the Gold Ink awards.  The other four are from the Jersey Shore Public Relations and Advertising Association, which he has won several awards from before.

Danielle Ackley-McPhail's novel, Yesterday's Dreams, will be released at the end of August.

Harrison Howe sold his humor novel, As a Matter of Fact...and Fun! to Renaissance ebooks.

MAY 2006

Carol MacAllister won the 2006 CNW/FFWA Florida State Writing Competition for Previously Published Non-fiction Article, 5 HM for "Molly Pitcher", 7 HM for "Stroll The Graveyard"

Bill Mingin had his 1,000 word short-story "The Little Men," accepted by Trunk Stories.

APRIL 2006

Bill Mingin sold a 2,000 word story, "Which Leads to What Comes Next", to Tales of the Unanticipated for a future issue, possibly early 2007, otherwise late 2007 or early 2008.

MARCH 2006

Brian Pederson's story "Alive and Squriming" will be published in Cthulhu Sex Magazine, Issue 24.

JANUARY 2006

John R. Platt is the featured author for January at HorrorWorld, where his story "A Group of Doctors is Called a Murder" is now available.

Danielle Ackley-McPhail has placed "Purgatory" in the Hear Her Roar anthology, to be published by Wilder Press (The Fantastic Book Club) in time for Ubercon in February 2006.

NOVEMBER 2005

Michael De Kler sold "Feed the Machine" to the Chimeraworld #3 anthology, edited by Mike Philbin, and due to be released January, 2006.

OCTOBER 2005

Jonathan Maberry sold a new nonfiction book of monster folklore, Vampires and Other Supernatural Predators to Pinnacle Books, for a Halloween 2006 release.

Eileen F. Watkins had some good news from her publisher, Amber Quill Press. Both Paragon and Dance With the Dragon made Amber Quill's Top Ten Best-Seller list in paperback for the July-September quarter.

Eileen Watkins' new novel, Paragon, is now available in eBook and trade paperback editions from Amber Quill Press.

JULY 2005

Noreen Braman sold her poem, "Real Estate", for publication in US 1 Summer Fiction, and sold another poem, "Minetta Women", to the Streets of New York anthology.

Danielle Ackley-McPhail sold "The Kindly One" to the Dark Furies anthology to be published by Die! Monster! Die! Books. Dark Furies should be available in August.

MAY 2005

Pat Lundrigan's story, "F-Plus" was a Finalist in the Writers of the Future Contest. Pat thanks GSHW critique group C for helping him improve his story. Out of 1500-1800 stories received per quarter, "F-Plus" made the top 10!

Jonathan Maberry signed a three-book deal with Kensington Books for a series of horror novels, the first of which, Ghost Road Blues, will be published mid-2006.

Jack Passarella sold "Undead Air" (a fictional zombie story featuring real-life Philadelphia DJs Preston and Steve based on the David Seidman painting Zombie Riot) to Fantasist Enterprise's Modern Magic: Tales of Fantasy and Horror anthology, scheduled for Jan/Feb 2006 (revised) publication. Fantasist Enterprises is a publisher of illustrated fantasy books.

Jonathan Maberry is the new Executive Director of the Writer's Room of Bucks County in Doylestown, PA.

Eileen F. Watkins has signed a contract with Amber Quill Press to publish her fourth novel, PARAGON.

Jack Passarella posted the Italian language cover of Wither on his website's gallery page. The Italian hardcover Wither has a pub date of April 2005.

JANUARY 2005

Brian Pederson's article on the new exercise equipment at the Summit YMCA got posted on their web site (January newsletter), as it appeared in his newspaper, the Summit Observer.

Jack Fisher sold an erotic short story (written with Monica O'Rourke) to Ruthie's Club, an erotica ezine.

Deborah LeBlanc's novel, Grave Intent, is scheduled for a July 2005 release from Dorchester/Leisure.

OCTOBER 2004

John "Jack" Passarella reports that Pocket Books sold foreign language rights for the three books in the Wendy Ward series, i.e., Wither, Wither's Rain, and Wither's Legacy to new horror Italian publisher Gargoyle Books. All three books are scheduled to be published in Italian hardcover editions within the next three years.

Jack Fisher sold his story "Boogedy" to THE BOOK OF DARK WISDOM (JAN 2005 issue).

John R. Platt received four Gold and two Silver awards, including honors in three "Excellence in Writing" categories, from the Jersey Shore Public Relations and Advertising Association at their 30th annual Jasper Awards.

Jack Fisher sold "Dust Boy" to Surreal magazine.

Carol MacAllister sold a poem to Justus Roux's Erotic Tales.

Harrison Howe sold a reprint, "Drowning Sorrows", which appeared in a now-defunct
magazine called "flicker" back in '99, to Whispering Spirits.

JUNE 2004

John "Jack" Passarella was interviewed by CityofAngel.com about his newest novel, Angel: Monolith, which is reviewed there as well. In an unrelated matter, John reports that preparations are under way for the 2nd Annual Matthew's Miles walkathon, all proceeds of which benefit the American Brain Tumor Association. Last year's inaugural walkathon raised over $20,000 for brain tumor research.

JANUARY 2004

Eileen F. Watkins has signed a contract to publish her novel BLACK FLOWERS through Amber Quill Press. Suspense with a dash of science fiction, BLACK FLOWERS focuses on a woman who discovers that her husband's successful genetic engineering firm is up to no good, and the threat may extend to their own children. This will be Eileen's third book through Amber Quill; her second, the mystery RIDE A DANCING HORSE, is due out in April 2004.

Jack Passarella has redesigned his Website, creating an interactive, virtual bookshelf on the home page, which now features the the cover proof for his next novel, Angel: Monolith, available from Simon Spotlight (a Simon & Schuster imprint) in June 2004.

Jonathan Maberry, writing as Shane MacDougall, appeared on Your Morning Show on CN8 on October 28 to promote his nonfiction book, The Vampire Slayers' Field Guide to the Undead. (Jonathan/"Shane" will be the GSHW's November 8th guest speaker.)

Jonathan Maberry's publisher, Strider Nolan, hosted a First Annual Vampires Fete book signing party Oct 22nd at the Sabine Rose Gallery in Doylestown, PA for The Vampire Slayers' Guide to the Undead. The GSHW's E.F. Watkins was also on the author panel with Jonathan and P.D. Cacek.

Jack Fisher reports that Flesh & Blood magazine will now be carried by INGRAM PERIODICALS, making F&B available to all chain bookstores in the US and Canada.

Shikhar Dixit will be the September 2003 author of the month at Twilight Tales. Shikhar's story "What Would You Do If I Followed You" is now [September 10, 2003] up at Twilight Tales.

Josephine Piraneo (aka Angelique Armae) won the Dream Realms Award for best cover art for her book McNamara's Ghost, a cover she designed herself. You can view the award here.

Carol MacAllister was the only US winner in a 24-hour UK writing contest.

Jack Fisher sold "Under the Stairs" to the Asylum 3 anthology, scheduled for release at Horrorfind Weekend 2003.

Jack Passarella sold WITHER'S LEGACY: A Wendy Ward Novel and an untitled novel to Pocket Books in a two book deal. (WITHER'S LEGACY will be a stand-alone sequel to WITHER and WITHER'S RAIN.)

Harrison Howe reports: "I've made four sales in the past ten days or so! Three short stories and one poem... The stories are going to Nevermore, A Different Path, and Planet Relish, and the poem to Decompositions. All are scheduled to appear in July and August issues."

John Platt had his story "All Hands" accepted to the Borderlands 5 anthology, to be published later this year.

Jack Passarella sold "Debts Long Due" to Best of Horrorfind 2 (reprint antho from Horrorfind.com online fiction); Best of Horrorfind 2 will be released during Horrorfind Weekend, August 15-17, 2003, during which there will be a group signing.

Josephine Piraneo learned that the cover art for her novel, McNamara's Ghost, is a finalist in the DREAM REALM AWARDS. She designed the cover art herself so, in her own words, she's "so psyched!"

Eileen Watkins signed a contract with Amber Quill Press to publish her second novel, Ride A Dancing Horse, a mystery set on a California horse farm.

Elaine Togneri sold her story "Klutzy Cousin" to Shred of Evidence. It will appear in either the August or November issue. Jack Fisher has sold fiction to Horror Garage #7 and the anthology Vicious Shivers (Undaunted Press).

Bill Mingin's 6,800 word fantasy "From Sunset to the White Sea, by Way of Twilight", is a due to appear in the Spring 2003 issue of Talebones. It's his 9th fiction sale and approximately his 80th publication, all told (including book reviews, essays, and articles.)

Karen Carpenter's short story "The Other Side of Darkness" will be appear in the upcoming GSHW anthology, Tales From a Darker State.

Carol MacAllister is publishing a collection of local writers' works, Writers On the Water's Edge, a diverse compilation of reprints from writers that live along the ocean from Asbury Park to Avon-by-the-Sea.

Shikhar Dixit has placed his story "The New Master" in the June 2003 issue of Scared Naked Magazine.

DECEMBER 2002

Dance With The DragonEileen Watkins' horror novel Dance With The Dragon is set to be released next spring in both e-book and paperback format from Amber Quill Press.

Shikhar Dixit and S. L. Robinson's short story "The Celestial Eye" is available in the first issue of Underworlds Magazine. Shikhar also has two illustrations therein. And if he may say so, Shikhar's story "Hearts" has been accepted for the GSHW Anthology Tales From A Darker State.

Jack Fisher reports that his story "In the Belly of a Demon" has sold to new pro anthology The Night Has Teeth, to be released at Horrorfind 2003.

Josephine Piraneo aka Angelique Armae's award winning vampire novel Come The Night is now available in trade paperback!! The book is on sale at Amberquill Press.

Mike Penncavage had three stories appear during the same week at: JUDAS EZINE , Futures Mysterious Anthology Magazine (available at Borders), and Crime Factory (available in Australia.)

Meghan Fatras's story "The Barmaid's Tale" is up at HORRORFIND.COM. Meghan's erotic horror story "Jaded" was accepted to be in the debut issue of Scared Naked magazine, due out in December, edited by the talented Anthony Beal.

Carol MacAllister's story, "Watcher" is included in the Halloween issue of Mausoleum Mortises Veritus.

OCTOBER 2002

Maghen Fatras' erotic short story "Jaded" has been accepted for the first issue (Dec. 2002) of Scared Naked magazine.

Carol MacAllister has three Halloween Stories and a poem on the Larry Sells' Enter the Realm e-zine that has many subdivisions. She continues to write for local newspapers and also the Atlantic Herald, NJ's first  totally on-line newspaper. Carol is also publishing a collection of local writers' works, "Writers On the Water's Edge," a diverse compilation of reprints from writers that live along the ocean from Asbury Park to Avon-by-the-Sea. Pieces range from sermons, speeches, plays, all types of mainstream works, non-fiction articles to even a recipe. She is also working with a British poet producing a text book for school children in the UK based on different forms of poetry. Many of her poems will be included as examples.

Noreen Braman has a poem in a new anthology Christmas Blessings and she will be joining other writers with Christmas gift-type books at a book signing and holiday event at the Barnes & Noble on Route I in North Brunswick, NJ on December 14, 2002.

Eileen Watkins sold her horror novel Dance With The Dragon to Amber Quill Press. It is due out next spring in both e-book and paperback format.

John Platt's Book Tour Continues: "The first Die Laughing book signing went so well, I thought I'd do a few more before my turn as the guest speaker at November's GSHW meeting. First up, Tuesday, October 15, at 7:30 pm is a book signing & reading at Borders Books in Livingston,NJ (973-535- 9001). After that, there's one more set for Saturday, October 26 at 2 pm,  again at Borders, this time the store in Ramsey, NJ (201-700-1967). UCN CoverMary SanGiovanni's short story collection Under Cover of Night, has been accepted for publication by Flesh & Blood Press. This trade paperback volume will feature cover artwork by Alan M. SEPTEMBER 2002

J.D. Beebe has an interview with Owl Goingback in Space & Time Magazine #96.

Noreen Braman's story "Treading Water," will be part of the Edinburough International Arts Festival Web Page as part of a big arts festival in Scotland that starts August 10 and runs through September 30.

Jack Fisher has sold fiction to Vivisections 2. His short story will be available in Cemetery Dance #40 later this month.

Jack Passerella now has a few extra Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) of Wither's Rain for "super fans" to win by helping spread the word about its impending release. Details on how to win an ARC (along with final and alternate book cover concepts) are available on his Web site.

John R. Platt's first Die Laughing book signing will take place Tuesday, September 10th, at the Borders Books store in East Brunswick, NJ. The event starts at 7:30. Come on out and have a blast! He'll be reading from the book as well as signing copies.


AUGUST 2002

Elaine Togneri has a story in US 1 Newspaper's Summer Fiction Issue for the third year running. Her story "Perdition" is horror, of course.

J. D. Beebe sold his short story "The Clinic" to the Decadence 3 anthology available in hardcover from Flesh & Blood Press early 2003. He also currently has one of his "James Mendham" stories, "X914,"  up at Horrorfind.com.

JULY 2002

Mary SanGiovanni's  story "Dust Shadows of the Dead" will finally see print in Black October's July issue. The cover has some great art by Marcel de Jong.

Also, she has  an article on the World Horror Convention coming out in the June issue of the HWA newsletter. An honorable mention for her long story,"Skincatchers," will appear in Year's Best Fantasy & Horror 15th Annual Edition,  available July 17, 2002. Lastly, Mary's story, "The Amazing Morpheus," is now available in Twilight Tales' Anthology, Freaks, Geeks, and Sideshow Floozies.

Elaine Togneri's flash story "The Food Critic" has been accepted for the Short Mystery Society's anthology Bullet Points. Wildside Press will put out the anthology and all proceeds will fund subscriptions to small press mystery magazines for needy writers.

Jack Fisher sold a story to The Urbanite. It will be out in August. The "All Horror" issue, of course.

Die LaughingJohn R. Platt will take part in the Bram Stoker Awards Weekend book signing, at the Citicorp Barnes and Noble, located on 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue in New York City. Also appearing will be Doug Clegg, Ellen Datlow, Linda Addison, Michael Laimo, Gordon Linzner, Harry Shannon and others. The signing begins at 4:30pm on Friday, June 7th. Also, Medium Rare Books has published a mini-interviewwith John in preparation for the release of his book Die Laughing.

John announced that Medium Rare Books will be releasing his short story and poetry collection, Die Laughing June 15th.  The final cover art for Die Laughing is in, and posted on the Medium Rare Books website.

Karen Carpenter sold her short story "Victims" to Whispers from the Shattered Forum. It will be published in Issue Number 12, due out in December 02/January 03.

JackPassarella received preliminary catalog copy for Wither's Rain to review/correct; nothing too exciting about the catalog copy, other than Pocket using "J.G. Passarella" where they should be using "John Passarella."

Shikhar Dixit received contract for his story "Home," to appear in Catalyst Books' Songs From Dead Singers, edited by Michael Kelly.

JUNE 2002

Carol MacAllister had some recent sales: A story to Chicken Soup For the Romantic Soul trade paperback. A horror poem chosen for The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror, Ellen Datlow editor. A short story on the current issue of ETOU, titled "B-Mary Drone." She continues to write non-fiction articles for the local newspapers and has recently joined the Nashville Song Writers Association. She has written several songs and lyrics for professional evaluation.

Scott Nicholoson's novel, The Red Church, is now available in all major booksellers and online.

Shikhar Dixit's short story, "Asian Gothic," is now available in the ROC Horror paperback anthology, The Darker Side: Generations of Horror, edited by John Pelan.

MAY 2002

Meghan Fatras has a short story, "Curiosity Doesn't Always Kill The Cat," currently up at Horrorfind.com. She also sold a poem to Sinisteria, which will be appearing in their August issue.

John R. Platt has been invited to teach several classes at the New Jersey Teen Arts Festival in Trenton, May 22 & 23. He'll teach two classes on horror writing, and two more on mixing genres in fiction. John will also take part in a mass book signing June 7 in New York City, in conjunction with the HWA's Bram Stoker Awards.

One of John's copywriting projects from his day job recently earned a Certificate of Achievement in the Art Directors of New Jersey annual competition. And finally, work from John R. Platt's day job recently received another award, an Award of Distinction from The Communicator Awards 2002 Print Media competition.

APRIL 2002

John R. Platt  announced that Medium Rare Books has put up a message board for his book, Die Laughing.

MARCH 2002

R.G. Evans was a featured reader in New York City at the launch reading for Touched by Eros, an anthology of erotic poetry that includes his poem "Family Album with Nude and Chimpanzee."

Monica 0' Rourke has a story up at Fangoria Frightful Fiction.

UK's Terror Tales accepted 10 stories for their upcoming anthology, Who Killed The Easter Bunny. Carol MacAllister's story, "Bobby's Bunny" will be included, as was her story, "Melody In White," in their award- winning anthology, I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas. Both pieces are dark humor. She also won the "Laughter Loaf Contest" for a kid's poem. Locally, she has placed over ten articles in The Coaster and Two River Times newspapers on a variety of issues including, Punxsutawney Phil's appearance on February 2nd. She finds writing for the paper is rewarding: on a visit to a local museum she saw two of her articles, one on Dan Rice, (The other Uncle Sam) and one about the shipwreck of the New Era laminated and set on the shelf along side of the displays. Her piece on the Groundhog will go in the town's scrapbook.

Jack Passarella sold "Debts Long Due" to Horrorfind.com. "'Debts...' is a 4,000 word ghost story that has 'haunted' me for several years. Over that time I've tinkered with it, front and back, and changed the title a couple times, but this is the first time it's seeing print anywhere."

Jack wrote an article about his foreign translation experience (Angel: Avatar in French) for WindoWatch.

FEBRUARY 2002

Shikhar Dixit's story "Harsh Geometries" is now up at Gothic.Net. His story "The Three Things," is now available in Dark Testamant, a new anthology from Delirium Books. Here is the SNAIL MAIL ORDER FORM. His artwork can also be found in Space & Time #95.

Sara Lessley's (aka S.L. Robinson) short story "The Celestial Eye," co-authored with Shikhar Dixit, will appear in the October 2002 issue of Underworlds. It's their first collaborative effort to be accepted, with hopefully more to come! Her poem "Understudy" was selected by DNA Publications for inclusion in an anthology tentatively entitled The Best of Dreams of Decadence, to be published by ROC Books. This poem appeared with two others in the Spring 1998 issue of Dreams of Decadence  as part of their Featured Poet section.

Mike Penncavage sold a crime story to the current issue of Hand Held Crime Magazine.

R.G. Evans' poem "More Life" appears in the January issue of Pif Magazine . His poems "The Shapeshifter's Wife" and "The Dawn of Man" are available on the Rough Beasts multi-media CD from Lone Wolf Publications. His story "La Llorona" is forthcoming in the GSHW's In a Fearful State CD anthology. His story "Deadline" appears (in translation) in the current issue of  Tenebres (France).

Elaine Togneri sold her short mystery, "Dream Vacation," to Futures Magazine. It will appear in the April/May/June 2002 issue. She also is proud to announce that she sold her story "Guardian Angel", to the MWA anthology, Blood on their Hands. The MW A anthology will be published by Berkley and edited by Lawrence Block.

JANUARY 2002

R. G. Evans has a poem ("More Life") in the January issue of Pif Magazine Online. He will be the featured reader Saturday, January 12 at Brenner's Brew, 21 E Commerce Street, Bridgeton (Cumberland County), NJ (856-451-5885).

DECEMBER 2001

Shikhar Dixit's short story "Harsh Geometries" will go live on January 21st, 2002 on Gothic.net. Also, he has sold two stories, "What Would You Do If I Followed You?" and "Celestial Eye," (co-written with S. L. Robinson) to Underworlds Magazine.

John Picinich was invited by Black Petals to participate in a round robin and write the middle of a five-part story titled "The Invasion" which appears in the current issue of the zine.

R.G. Evans’ story "Deadline" has been published in France in the current issue of Tenebres magazine.  Also,  his story "La Llorona" was bought by the GSHW anthology In a Fearful  State." and "The Man Who Holds Your Hand Beneath the Pale Moonlight" will  appear in the debut issue of Wicked Hollow.  And lastly, four of his poems including "Family Album with Nude and Chimpanzee" will appear  online in the next issue of Verse Libre.

Monica J. O’Rourke sold a story to the Reckless Abandon antho and to the Octoberland antho.

Meghan Fatras sold her poem "Drip" to Tapestry.

Carol MacAllister placed in the Laughter Loaf contest. Three stories were accepted by Fading Shadows publication - Alien Worlds: "Keeping Up Appearances," "Berrymen of the 4th Quadrangle," and "The Edge" which will also be used on their website as a free download story. Four poems accepted by Penny Dreadful for their next issue. "Tuxedo Escape" accepted for multi-media on-line publication, The Wildclown Chronicles.  Seven articles have recently appeared in The Coaster Newspaper on various topics, Uncle Sam, The New Era Shipwreck, Harry Potter, Spy House, Graveyard Artwork, Pearl Harbor, and the WTC atrocity.

Carol has also completed a 12 week session at the Citizens Police Academy sponsored by the Monmouth County Sheriff's office. It accepts 50 Monmouth County residents a year for a comprehensive course on police issues. The courses are taught at the Monmouth Police Academy by academy instructors and professionals in the field. At graduation she received a diploma from Sheriff Oxley and the Academy.

Richard Geyer has just published the first issue of a new pocket-sized poetry journal, Yellow Bat Review. Contributors' copies were mailed out last Wednesday. The journal is being edited by Craig Sernotti. The debut issue contains dark poetry by such smallpress
luminaries as John Grey, Kurt Newton and the GSHW's own Karen Porter. Future issues will include both mainstream and genre poetry, including horror. We're also publishing vignettes (which many people refer to as prose poems) and short fiction up to 500 words, but this is a poetry journal and the prose will be in a support role only.

J. D. Beebereports that DENIZENS OF THE DARK, An anthology of ‘classic monsters’
Edited by Ev Bell and including a foreword by George Romero, has bought his story, “Mishcief Night”, a major rewrite of “The Egg”. It will be a print anthology and from what he’s seen so far, it looks VERY good. Also of note are contributions from Gord Rollo, Monica J. O’Rourke and Jason M. Light

Karen Carpenter has had her short story "Must Be True Love" accepted for the anthology In a Fearful State, and her short story "Survival" will be appearing in the October 31 issue of Apocalypse Fiction.

John R. Platt sold his short story "Waiting" to Strange Horizons.  John also sold a micro-short, "Jarring," to the-phone-book.com, where it was scheduled to go live on June 1. The story will be available to read on the site, to down-load, to listen to as an audio file, or to access via WAP-enabled mobile phones. His short story "That Old Black Magic" from the Bell Book & Beyond anthology was just positively reviewed in Rue Morgue magazine.

Anna Lascurian took third place in the Futures 2nd Annual Kathey Clarey "Fire to Fly" Mystery Writer Memorial Awards for her novel, POST MORTEM BLUES.

Mike Penncavage placed 5th in the 2000 Science Fiction Writers of the Earth Contest for his short story, "The Corn Bear". Another of his, "Masquerade" was a runner up in the 2000 Orchard Press Mystery Contest. "The Third Act" was picked up by Murder Hole Magazine and "It's Better in Brooklyn" was chosen to be in the Fantastical Visions Anthology.

Karen R. Porter has two poems in the current issue of BLACK PETALS, two more in ROMANTICS QUARTERLY and one each in NOT ONE OF US, IODINE, and LIQUID OHIO. She also has five poems accepted by VORTEX OF THE MACABRE.
